Web 2.0 means trust- Even for Real Estate Agents

Real Estate agents and Realtors around the world often share the common belief to not share their marketing tools and toys.  In a highly competitive market and industry, fending for yourself and being the first and the best is what truly rings the cash register.  Most will agree that this is absolutely the case in Real Estate, however some conclude that some of the new tools, toys and tricks out there are worth sharing – to facilitate communication and business more efficiently.

Having a conversation with Tim Perry, a Rock Star YouReach agent, he had an idea to connect Real Estate agents in the same community and their Listings in a common place online in Social Media.  I immediately responded that an agent’s competitive nature might not allow for participation in that sort of arrangement. His response was truly interesting and has kept my wheels turning for days…he said:

“I have always been taught not to share my toys, but this is different. Social Media has forced us as agents to be more transparent, and that lessens our competitive edge. People that GET that are likely more willing to get our audience the best information as simply as possible, even if that means collaborating information together.”

So, are even Real Estate agents, some of the most competitive professionals out there, recognizing the value in social media tools as something MORE than a competitive advantage to those in their industry? It appears so– while it is important to keep your custom marketing strategies and tools somewhat private, the actual communication tools are out there, and the ability for EVERYONE (agents, potential agents, clients, managers, competitors) to know how to use these tools puts grease in the wheels for communication AND business. Again, social media tools are not little marketing tricks, they are here to stay as an advancement in the way all people communicate.

Improving communication, and this new sharing of “toys” builds trust online and facilitates business… its a win/win for everyone.

Sure, real estate professionals are inherently competitive and not likely to collaborate when unnecessary, but social media and the new wave of the internet is changing the way agents must interact with their audience. Looking forward to see what happens of this, Jessica.

I think we all are looking forward to it— Social Media is happening and we are still learning every day about it. What are some of your experiences with social media in real estate?
